Community Rugby relies on volunteers to function and the RFU estimates that nationally there are over 100,000 volunteers ‘making the game happen’ To recognise and reward the efforts of these volunteers the RFU and Sussex RFU run a number of Volunteer Reward and Recognition programmes each year.

  • Key responsibilities

    The County Volunteer lead is responsible for:


    • Developing and deploying initiatives to support clubs in their efforts to recruit, train and retain volunteers.  
    • Managing the deployment of RFU and SRFU Reward & Recognition programmes. 

RFU Programmes

  • RFU President’s Value the Volunteer Outstanding Contribution Award

    Awarding Body:

    Awarded by the RFU based on nominations from SRFU Board


    Timescale:

    Annual at beginning of the season September/October of the relevant season 


    Criterion:

    Outstanding contribution to the game of rugby - normally over a sustained period of time


    Awarded To:

    Individuals


    Type of Award:

    Usually, a day out for two with lunch etc. at an England International 

  • Honda Awards

    Awarding Body:

    Awarded by the RFU based on nominations from, CB, Clubs and affiliated groups,


    Timescale:

    Annual, Jan/Feb of the relevant season


    Criterion:

    Varies – will be announced by the RFU


    Awarded To:

    Varies but normally an individual


    Type of Award:

    Varies.

Sussex RFU Programmes

  • Walrus Award

    Awarding Body:

    The President of the Sussex RFU


    Timescale:

    Awarded annually at the end of the Season


    Criterion:

    The individual, group, team or club whose actions/activities within the SEASON define the core values of Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline and Sportsmanship


    Awarded To:

    Individual, Group, Team or Club


    Type of Award:

    The Walrus Trophy

  • Best of Sussex Award

    Awarding Body:

    Sussex RFU Board


    Timescale:

    Awarded annually at the end of the Season


    Criterion:

    Awarded to an individual who in the opinion of the Board has excelled in promoting the game, contributing benefit of the rugby community or moving the game forward within the season.


    Awarded To:

    Individual


    Type of Award:

    Trophy


  • Community Awards

    Awarding Body:

    Selected by an independent CB panel from nominations in the form of a citation from individual clubs or affiliated groups.

    Note: Clubs may nominate themselves or an individual


    Timescale:

    Awarded annually at the end of the Season


    Criterion:

    Awarded to a nominated club or individual who in the opinion of the panel has developed or improved community relations, worked with the community to increase awareness or worked within the community to increase opportunities for new groups to participate (Equality, Diversity and Inclusion).


    Awarded To:

    Club or Individual


    Type of Award:

    Trophy


  • Chairman’s Thank You

    Awarding Body:

    Invitation from the Chair of the SRFU for two to attend lunch and an international game at Twickenham, as a guest of the SRFU Council Rep.


    Timescale:

    As agreed each season.


    Criterion:

    Services to Sussex Rugby


    Awarded To:

    Individual plus one


    Type of Award:

    Lunch and tickets for an international game for two at Twickenham as a guest of the SRFU Council Rep.
